Stump Grinding Gold Coast
Stump grinding uses a machine to grind a stump below ground level so the area can be reused. It does not remove all roots—larger lateral and tap roots remain underground where they naturally decompose. Grinding is less disruptive than full excavation.
Grinding vs Excavation
- Grinding: Grinds the stump below ground level. Less disruptive, faster, and suitable for most situations.
- Excavation: Removes the stump and root ball entirely. More disruptive and may damage surrounding ground.

What Affects Stump Grinding
Diameter
Wider stumps take longer to grind and produce more grindings.
Height
Taller stumps may need cutting before grinding.
Root Flare
Surface roots and root flares can be ground if they're within reach.
Access
The grinder needs enough width to reach the stump.
Utilities
Underground services must be identified before grinding.
Finished Level
The grinding depth depends on what the area will be used for.
What Happens to Grindings and the Area
Grindings (the wood chips produced) can be left as mulch, spread on garden beds, or removed from site. The hole can be backfilled with soil or grindings depending on the intended use. These are options to discuss—not guaranteed inclusions.
Is Stump Work Separate from Tree Removal?
Stump grinding is often a separate service from tree removal. A tree can be removed and the stump ground at the same time or later. Call to discuss whether you need both.
